In every work of art there must be a harmonious relationship between feeling and form, a perfect balance between the idea which the artist wishes to express and the means he uses to express it. If one of the means seems to us clearly unnecessary to the expression of the idea, or if the artist's idea – the object of his expression – is only imperfectly communicated to us by the means he employs, our aesthetic pleasure is weakend, if not destroyed.

”Affect” is the key word. Change the ”a” to an ”e” and you get lighting effect. Effects should be handled with all the care and used with the rarity of fireworks. The most successful and brilliant work a lighting designer does is usually the least noticeable.

Dessa två husgudar följer ständigt med mig i mitt arbete som ljussättare. Appia med sin perfektion och balans, och Rosenthal med sin något mer subtila inställning till ljus. Båda förespråkar en förståelse och integration med de andra medierna i teater, och Rosenthal ägnar en stor del av sin bok ”The magic of light” åt att beskriva hur viktigt kommunikationen med övriga designers i teaterteamet är. Öppenhet och ödmjukhet är något jag förespråkar och kommunikation är ett utav de viktigaste redskapen man har som ljussättare. För det är det som är spännande med teaterproduktion. Det är en kollaborerande konstart, och man skapar ett uttryck tillsammans.
